KMC Ltd. has successfully executed the contract for the Rehabilitation of the Belmeken HPP, which is part of the project for the rehabilitation of the Belmeken-Sestrimo-Momina Klisura hydropower complex and is implemented within the framework of the Grant Agreement between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as Administrator of the International Fund for Nuclear Decommissioning Support Facility at Kozloduy NPP (IFC/KIDSF) and the National Electricity Company EAD.
KMC Ltd. executed all the civil and erection works of the Electrical part. The works included installation of a new control and monitoring system, generator excitation system, active power control system and all other main and auxiliary control systems.
After 72 hours of testing in real operating conditions. The unit is available with 75 MW in generator mode and 52 MW in pump mode.
Rehabilitation of XA2 is currently in progress and is expected to be completed in August 2022. Following the successful completion of the works on XA2, rehabilitation of the fifth hydro unit of the plant is to be completed, announced the company today.
Active work is also continuing on the other two plants of the Belmeken-Sestrimo-Momina Klisura cascade – the Sestrimo HPP and the Momina Klisura HPP.
At the Sestrimo HPP, the rehabilitation of XA2 was successfully completed in March 2022. Rehabilitation works are pending for the other machine at the plant. Currently the plant is operating at its full capacity of 240 MW.
At Momina Klisura HPP, the rehabilitation of XA2 has been completed and XA1 is in 72-hour commissioning testing mode. Currently the plant is operating at its full capacity of 120 MW.
At present, the total available capacity of the Belmeken-Sestrimo-Momina Gorge cascade in generator mode is 660 MW (out of a total of 735 MW) and in pump mode 104 MW (out of a total of 104 MW).
The rehabilitation will upgrade the reliability of the cascade plants, improve their ability to contribute to the regulation of the country’s electricity system and increase the security of electricity supply.
